Buah Bilak

Have anyone of you heard of Buah Bilak, bael fruit or stone apple (Aegle marmelos)? This exotic fruit has a smooth and super hard woody shell that must be cracked with the help of a hammer or machete.

It has a pleasant aroma, just like eating the marmalade and smelling of roses and citrus. The yellow pulp of bael fruit is very fibrous and the seeds can be found in the slimy mucilage.

Bael fruit is used in traditional medicine in India and its medicinal values had been reported here.

My mom accidentally planted this bael fruit tree in her garden. All this while, my mom thought it is a fig tree as the fruit seller told her so, and now the truth has been revealed. It bear a lot of fruits.

By the way, are Gelinggai and Bilak the same fruit or they are different? Please enlighten me.

PEST----RAT

Feel so good to be able to trap the big size rat finally. However, many more rats out there. I have seen many times 2-3 rats happily passing by in front of me, and the cats sit nearby just look at the rats and do nothing! These rats are so daring! Nowadays, cats just do not interested with them (why why why).

This pest is destroying my garden! They dug holes in pots and uproot so many plants (curry leaves, ginger etc). They also dig out and eat the seeds (roselle, cucumber, luffa, pumpkin, bitter gourd seeds etc) that I sowed.  I hate them =(

Peria Katak?

Peria katak plants are not doing so well this time. They fruit less and their sizes are smaller. Due to the haze problem, I have reduced the frequency to go out to look and check on my plants.

Sometimes the peria katak is over ripe and become “peria bunting”…haha…Am I using the correct term?

Beside this peria katak, I found another smaller type of peria katak growing in kampung. It is just about half the size of our thumb. Not sure they are bitterer than the peria katak above or not. They are still in my fridge now. Any idea what is the name of this type of bitter gourd?
Interested with the seeds, you may find it here  =)

Harvest from the mini garden of mine…maybe last month cannot remember the exact date. I have ginseng jawa leaves, papayas, mulberry, white and blue multilayer blue pea flowers.

Using the mulberry and multilayer blue pea flowers from the garden, let’s make a healthy, nutritious and colorful coleslaw salad!
The ingredients needed are super simple, we need finely-shreddeds raw cabbage and carrot, mulberries, blue pea flowers & a small pack of mayonnaise!

Just mix all the ingredients…there you go!

I serve it with roasted chicken, french bread & ya, I know you saw the sambal petai too….So, it is sort of fusion food already. Last month was petai season in Malaysia…how could I miss this delicious delicacy right

Ya...is all about bitter gourd @ peria katak harvest again! I took a trip at middle of the October month and come back to Malaysia after 2 weeks!

After i came back from travel...i was "WOW" when i saw lot of cute size bitter gourds hanging on the fences, waiting me to pluck them! The haze is gone and it rains a lot!

So now the bitter gourd plants happily bear more & more fruits! I give them away....tak sempat nak masak... ada guests in the house!

I have about 3-4 bitter gourd plants. There are actually 2 type of bitter gourds in the pictures below, one of them are bigger and longer in size. While the other bitter gourd plants bear super cute size bitter gourds.

Well, i do not mind...what size the bitter gourds are, as well as they are GREEN with pesticide free, i am satisfy enough!
Harvest Date: 6 Oct 2015

Kucing Galak @ Malaysia's catnip

If you want to give your beloved cat a lovely birthday gift, please look for kucing galak plant. Cats are crazy for this plant. Kucing galak plant (Acalypha indica) can be considered as local “catnip”, as it receives similar intense attraction from the cats.
Effect on cats
When you leave the bruised leaves or stems or roots of kucing galak plant to cats, they will: rubbing on the plant, rolling on the ground, pawing at it, licking it, and chewing it. These behaviours are very similar as catnip is given to cats. Manage to find a numbers of videos about cats playing and eating kucing galak plants from youtube...here i share 2 of them...Thanks to Zakaria Abu Bakar & Zarcont for the video.. .. pinjam yer

It is actually edible for human.
From reading, kucing galak plants can be used to treat mouth ulser, skin disease, increase body energy and diseases related to respiratory system such as asthma, bronchitis and cough. Please read more in Google before consuming the plants k.

I am selling kucing galak plants at RM10.

Peria Katak (bitter gourd) & their shape

$

It is very interesting to see different shape & size of bitter gourds/peria katak grow from the same batch of seeds

This type of peria katak has the longest length (about 5 inches) and has a very smooth surface. I think this type of bitter gourd is most likely to get the better price in the market …
Second type of peria katak is slightly shorter in length (about 3-4 inches) and has a narrower shape with pointed ends. They look so unique to me.
Last but not least, the 3rd type of mini gourds is the cutest, very mini in size (1-2 in) and oval in shapes rather than oblong
What about their bitterness? Don’t ask me…as I cooked all of them together. =p

Really not sure whether variation do exist in their bitterness or not, even though they are differ substantially in their shape.

But I am very sure these peria katak are bitterer than the commercial size (big & long) of bitter gourd (peria kampas) that we get from the market.

I like the bitterness in bitter gourd….what about you?

Digital Samsung Door Lock

Anyone still remember the very popular Korean drama “You Who Came From The Stars”?

This drama talked about an alien (Do Min Joon) who landed on Earth in the Joseon Dynasty and possesses a near perfect appearance and enhanced physical abilities involving his vision, hearing and speed.  400 years later, he falls in love with a top actress (Cheon Song Yi) in the modern era.

Besides enjoying the fantasyromance story between the two main actor and actress, the thing that caught my eye in the movie scene is the DIGITAL Samsung door lock.

I had seen & touched similar digital door lock as shown in popular Korean drama!  I have a close relative that work as Distributor for Digital Samsung door lock for Northern Malaysia.

Terung Telunjuk Seeds

Believe me or not, I bought all these colorful and fresh produce at RM10 only! So happy! Get all of the produce from the same store except the beautiful orange color fruits.

Looking from far, I thought the attractive orange fruit was chili!!! Haha… At last, I realize that it is actually a mature Terung Telunjuk (a type of brinjal@aubergine) that meant for planting. They are too old for eating.

Young Terung telunjuk is actually light green in color with white stripes at bottom. This type of brinjal will turned into orange yellowish color upon maturing.

Nevertheless, the whole plant as well as the purple flower of this type of brinjal is the same as of other varieties.   People usually eat this terung telunjuk as ulam with sambal belacan.

However, me myself have never taste it.  Okay, I should grow one and eat it!

The seeds are very beautiful! Is time to get them out from the flesh. Thanks to youtube, i manage to extract the seeds out efficiently in very short time

Ya…because of that….i have a lot of fresh seeds of Terung Telunjuk ready for sale.

Email me at eesuqi@gmail.com if you are interested.

I am very lucky to have a lot of asam jawa@tamarind tress near my work place.

We can hand picked the fresh asam jawa that dropped on the ground almost everyday when the asam jawa fruits is ripen.

We eat them fresh just like that so that we do not get bored with our work. Yes, it is very sour!!  I also freeze some for cooking later on.

Sometimes the asam jawa pods get moldy especially on the raining day.

Some of the asam jawa's seeds germinated into new life!!

A lot of baby plants of asam jawa can be seem near the big asam jawa tree.

Besides asam jawa tree, we have a cotton tree near by.
The scenery is simply amazing when a lot of cotton  pods have burst. Look like it is snowing!

You have no place to grow them? Easy.....you can always grow them in pot just like me. They can still produce beautiful blooms for you to enjoy!

Gorgeous Mrs Garfield

I get to know the name of this gorgeous Hippeastrum as “Mrs Garfield” through Mr. Google. Thanks to him.

'Mrs. Garfield'? ?  The name is really weird! The flower definitely does not look like the Garfield cat at all right?

Hippeastrum 'Mrs. Garfield' has been a favourite of mine, the bloom is so lovely. The soft white 6 petals flower looks like a star, and elegantly reticulated with pink veins.

Hippeastrum 'Mrs. Garfield' is easy to be recognised through it broad leaves centred with a white stripe down the middle of each leaf.

This type of hippeastrum is pretty common in Malaysia. Mr. Google said it has been existence in UK since 18th century. Wow!

I planted the bulb on July 2015 & it bloom 3 months later. So soon and I didn’t expect the bloom.  It really surprised me!
